Age of Wonders 4: The Silver Seas

Is The Silver Seas worth $24.99?

Quick answer

Buy it if you want a sea-based economy and naval war; skip it if you play land empires and never sail. The free Manta update already gives you trade routes and the water rework.

The honest answer is that $24.99 buys you a culture and four tomes, and the free update already gave you the systems they live in. Whether that is worth it depends on one question: do you want to play an empire whose economy runs across water?

If the answer is yes, this is the best version of that fantasy the game has. If the answer is no, the free Manta update is already the most important thing that happened to Age of Wonders 4 this month, and you can skip the expansion without missing a mechanic.

What $24.99 actually buys

You getYou do not get
Mercantile culture with two subculturesTrade routes — those are free
Aqualon and Sharkkin formsThe water rework — also free
Four tomes with units and enchantmentsSword and Staff — free
Bond of the Free Captains dwellingThe Chilled status — free
Ocean Happenings, wonders, landmarksA new victory condition
6 achievements, 3 music tracks, 4 rulersA naval campaign or scenario
Pirate UI skin and banner emblemsAnything for PS4, Xbox One or Switch

The left column is content: units, tomes, a culture, a dwelling, map objects, cosmetics. The right column is systems: rules that apply to every player whether or not they bought anything. That split is unusually clean for a Paradox expansion, and it makes the buying decision easier than usual.

Who should buy it

  • Regular player. You play the base game regularly. The culture is a new way to play a game you already like, and the tomes slot into existing builds.
  • Economy first. You like economies more than battles. Mercantile is the first culture whose power comes from connections rather than territory.
  • Naval ambition. You want to fight on water. The expansion is the only source of sea wonders, sea landmarks and a sea dwelling; the free update gives you the rules but not the destinations.
  • Pass holder. You are buying the pass anyway. If Court of the Archfey and Forge of the Firstborn interest you, the pass is cheaper than the pieces.

Who should skip it

  • Land only. You play land empires and never sail. The culture and the ocean content will sit unused.
  • Older console. You are on PS4, Xbox One or Switch. It is not available, and neither is the base game's current version.
  • Lapsed player. You have not played the base game in a year. Try the free Manta changes first; they might be enough on their own.
  • Sale watcher. You are waiting for a sale. Paradox expansions discount regularly, and nothing in this one is time-limited except the launch-window conversation.

The free weekend, and how to use it

Age of Wonders 4 was free to play from 10 AM PT on 5 November to 10 AM PT on 9 November 2026 on Steam and Xbox. That is the base game, not the expansion, and four days is enough to answer the only question that matters: does the underlying turn structure hold your attention?

If you try it and like it, buy the base game first and play a campaign. The expansion will still be there, and by then you will know whether you want to spend your next run on water.

The value comparison

At $24.99, the expansion costs more than the base game's $19.99 sale price and less than a full-price new game. For that you get roughly the content of a previous large expansion: one culture, four tomes, two forms, a dwelling, a realm template, a mount, a society trait and a set of map objects.

Measured against hours, a single campaign is 20 to 40 hours if you finish it. Measured against novelty, the culture is genuinely new — no other culture can settle deep water — while the tomes are variations on themes the game already has.

The pass at $49.99 changes the arithmetic if you want the 2027 content. Bought alone, this expansion is the more expensive way to own one piece and the cheaper way to own the one you want.

The bottom line

Buy it if you want to play the sea. Skip it if you want to play the land. The free update already improved the game for everyone, and no part of this expansion is required to enjoy it.

The release date and price page has the platform and regional details, the Expansion Pass 4 page does the bundle arithmetic, and the Mercantile culture is the thing you are actually deciding about.

Waiting for a sale

Nothing in this expansion is time-limited except the launch conversation. Paradox discounts its expansions regularly, and a 30–50% discount is the normal shape of a first-year sale. If you are unsure, waiting costs you nothing except the current multiplayer conversation.

The one thing that will not come back is the free weekend. That was a four-day window on the base game, and it has closed.

The bundle angle

If you also want Age of Wonders 4 itself, the release announcement mentioned a collaboration bundle with Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and an updated Collector's Bundle that now includes Expansion Pass 3 content. Both are dynamic bundles, which means owning one part reduces the price of the rest. Check them before buying the base game and this expansion separately, the combined price is sometimes lower than the sum.
