About this guide

This is an independent guide to Age of Wonders 4: The Silver Seas and the free Manta update that shipped with it. It is written for players who are deciding whether to buy the expansion, starting a Mercantile run, or coming back to the game after the water and trade rework.
It is not affiliated with Triumph Studios or Paradox Interactive. The game's imagery is official promotional material, used to illustrate the mechanics being described.
Why the site exists
Most coverage of a new expansion is either a feature list or a review. Both are useful, and neither answers the question a player has at turn forty: which structure do I build next, and what does it actually pay?
This site tries to answer that kind of question. Each page is built around a specific decision, which subculture, which tome, whether to upgrade a water outpost, and gives the numbers the developers published, in tables, with the source named.
Sources
The material behind these pages, in order of authority:
- The release announcement for The Silver Seas and the Manta update, published on Steam on 3 November 2026, including the version number and the free weekend window.
- Developer diaries 65 to 68, published in the weeks before release: the tomes, trade routes and the Mercantile culture, world map content, and the art of the expansion.
- The Manta Update patch notes, published on 3 November 2026, which contain the specific rules for embarking, trade structures, the Chilled status and the Sword and Staff.
- The Steam store pages for the expansion, the base game and Expansion Pass 4, which carry the prices, platforms and content lists.
Where those sources disagree — for example on the number of pirate captains, the site follows the store page and the developer diary that describes the system in detail, and says which one it is following.
Editorial limits
It does not invent numbers. If a tome's spell does not have a published damage value, the page describes what the spell does and leaves the number out. If an achievement's condition has not been published, the page counts the achievements rather than naming them.
It does not publish a tier list. Build pages are build orders: choices in the order you make them, with the reasoning attached, not a ranked list of units pretending to be objective.
It does not use AI-generated artwork for the game. Every screenshot and piece of art on the site is official material from Steam or Paradox's own announcements.
Corrections
If a page contradicts something you can see in the game, send a note through the contact page. Include the page, the game version and what you saw; the version number matters because patches change numbers quietly.
Corrections are applied to the page and the checked date is updated. Pages that have not been re-checked against a new patch keep their old date rather than being silently refreshed.
